Hon. Tanya R. Kennedy was recently appointed as an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, First Department by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.  Justice Kennedy has served as a Justice of the Supreme Court, New York County, since January 2016.  She was elected to Civil Court in November 2005 and thereafter served in Criminal Court, Civil Court, Family Court, as Acting Supreme Court Justice and as Supervising Judge of Civil Court, New York County.

Before her election to Civil Court, Justice Kennedy served as Principal Law Clerk to Hon. Barry A. Cozier. Prior to her clerkship with Justice Cozier, Justice Kennedy served in the Office of the Corporation Counsel, New York City Law Department, as an Assistant Corporation Counsel in the Bronx Family Court Division and in the Bronx Tort Division, where she was promoted to Tort Trial Specialist and later to Assistant Deputy Chief. 

Justice Kennedy is currently a member of the Committee on Pattern Jury Instructions of the Association of Supreme Court Justices of the State of New York; the Board of Directors of the Supreme Court Justices Association of the City of New York; the Board of Directors of the New York City Bar Association; and Executive Committee member of the Women in Law Section of the New York State Bar Association.  In addition, she is a member of the Board of Overseers of the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, where she received her law degree, and is an Advisory Board Member of Penn State Law.  She is among one of eight Penn State University alumni selected by the Board of Trustees to receive the 2020 Distinguished Alumni Award.  Justice Kennedy is also former Adjunct Professor at Fordham University School of Law, where she taught a juvenile justice seminar for ten years.

Justice Kennedy is past president of the National Association of Women Judges (NAWJ). After organizing a Legislative Caucus on Capitol Hill to focus on ensuring a healthy work environment free of sexual harassment, Justice Kennedy led NAWJ in trademarking “#WETOO IN THE LEGAL WORKPLACE.”  

Janine A. Nedd has 10+ years’ experience in law firm administration.  She is currently with Morrison Forester LLP, overseeing global document services and staff in various offices as well as outsourced vendor services and relations. 

Janine started her career at White & Case LLP where she collaboratively created their global computer environment.  She has worked in some of the firm’s worldwide offices including Johannesburg, Warsaw, Stockholm, London, Helsinki, Singapore, Brussels, Paris and Mexico.  Janine managed the word processing, proofreading and creative services departments in later years.  She also enjoyed positions at LeBoeuf Lamb and Dewey & LeBoeuf.

Janine is currently President-Elect of the Association of Legal Administrators, New York City Chapter.  She joined the association in 2015 and was nominated and elected to the board of directors the following year.  During the first two years, Janine chaired the Education and Professional Development committees.  In 2019 she chaired the Symposium committee which created a full day of learning in the areas of human resources, finance, IT, general operations and communications.

Janine has a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Criminal Justice from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. She has volunteered at HerJustice, a non-profit serving New York City women living in poverty with high-stakes legal needs.  Janine also volunteered at Great Neck Senior Center training computer and software to their members.
