Emergency Skills, Inc. is proud to offer Mental Health First Aid Training to the members of the ALA!  This ground-breaking, informative, and interactive program aims to increase awareness about mental illness and decrease the stigma associated with it. 

Students will learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of several mental illnesses and substance abuse. They will learn and apply a concrete set of tools designed to help them interact with a person in crisis.  In order to receive certification, members are required to attend all 4 sessions.  However, you may still attend any session but will not receive the certificate. 

The “Mental Health First Aid” 8-Hour training will be split up into 4 sessions - on 2 consecutive Tuesday/Thursdays from 8:00 am to 10:00 am.  The schedule is as follows:

Session 1:  Tuesday, July 17th, 2018 

Topics to be covered: 

  • Introduction of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), the 8-hour training, and the role of a Mental Health First Aider
  • Overview of the prevalence and impact of mental health problems in the United States
  • Introduction of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE)
  • Discuss the signs, symptoms, and possible risk factors and warning signs of Depression and Anxiety

Session 2:  Thursday, July 19th, 2018

Topics to be covered: 

  • Apply the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE) for someone who is experiencing depressive symptoms or anxiety
  • Apply the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE) to someone who is at risk of suicide or practicing self-injury
  • Explore how to respond to someone who is not in crisis, but may benefit from the later steps of the action plan

Session 3:  Tuesday, July 24th, 2018

Topics to be covered: 

  • Brief Review of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan
  • Understand Panic Attacks and apply the action plan to someone in crisis
  • Understand and apply the action plan to someone in crisis from a Traumatic Event
  • Understand Psychotic Disorders and apply the action plan to someone in crisis

Session 4:  Thursday, July 26th, 2018

Topics to be covered: 

  • Overview of the risk factors and warning signs of Substance Use Disorders
  • Apply the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) for people with symptoms of a substance use disorder or a related crisis
  • Concluding Activity designed to synthesize information from the entire course
