Unconscious/implicit bias relates to a tendency toward quick judgments, beliefs and assumptions based upon those attitudes that exist in the subconscious, where we are not actively aware of them existing. As part of our Black History month programing, psychologist Dr. Fritz Galette will discuss:

  • What is unconscious bias?
  • Why it is critical to address?
  • How does it particularly impact communities of color?
  • What can we do to better understand and address it in the workplace?

Over the past few years, we have seen a significant increase in the effort and resources devoted to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives and practices. While attention has been paid to educating, training and challenging the status quo, many feel that this has had a limited impact on people's deeply held attitudes, beliefs and behaviors at the unconscious level. A recent survey found that 7 out of 10 black respondents believe unconscious bias still exists and continues to very much negatively impact how they are treated. Many believe it has only gotten worse as people suppress overt behavior without changing deeply held underlying feelings and attitudes.

In the work place, unchecked unconscious bias can be more harmful than explicit discrimination. This can have significant implications in terms of hiring, promotion and day-to-day inclusion practices.
